U.S. conservation investment routed to eucalyptus expansion in Brazil’s Cerrado

A June 6, 2023, Mongabay article by Shanna Hanbury discusses how U.S. President Joe Biden pledged $50 million toward the initiative, claiming it would help conserve Latin America’s most critical ecosystems. The funds have not yet been released, but TIG has already started acquiring new land. The entire article can be read here.

Note: The Campaign to STOP GE Trees just completed work in this region where we documented the social and ecological impacts of the explosion of industrial eucalyptus monocultures in the region, including the construction of the massive new Suzano pulp mill, the largest in the world. It is being constructed despite Suzano reporting a 4% decrease in pulp production and warnings from investment advisors to sell Suzano stock.
