Rachel Parent is at the COP 28, in cooperation with the Global Justice Ecology Project, to help stop genetically engineered (GE) trees.
What is COP 28?
UN Climate Change conferences (or COPs) happen every year. COP 28 refers to the United Nations Climate Change Conference that is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November until 12 December 2023.
Why is Rachel discussing genetically engineered trees?
Genetically engineered trees can have devastating social and ecological impacts and are being proposed for use as forest carbon offsets. Forest carbon offsets are a dangerous false solution to climate change that displaces indigenous peoples and local communities in order to allow polluters to continue polluting. While at COP 28, Rachel will be presenting the demands of Indigenous, Quilombola and local communities in Brazil devastated by the social and ecological impacts of industrial tree plantations, and threatened by the planned future use of genetically engineered tree plantations.
